New Atlantic sheriff replacing top staff with his own team

Atlantic County's sheriff-elect is forming his own posse to help him run his office. The Atlantic County Sheriff's Office will get new undersheriffs and other administrative personnel to replace those appointed by current Atlantic County Sheriff James McGettigan. Republican Frank Balles, whose election in November ends a 15-year run by McGettigan, said he chose his executive staff to "restore pride, integrity and leadership in the Sheriff's Office."

Jury rules suspended sheriff's officer denied due process

A suspended Atlantic County sheriff's officer suffered severe emotional distress when she was not advised of the appeal process, a jury has ruled.

Jane E. Bentley, who had worked for the Sheriff's Office for more than 20 years, was awarded $92,000 by the jury last month.

'Sheriffs have to be sworn in by when?' New Jersey counties ask

Take three outgoing county sheriffs. Toss in two incoming sheriffs who were sworn in Thursday. Add another county sheriff-elect who received court permission Friday to be sworn in at a later date. What you get are different legal opinions - never mind a review by the state Attorney General's Office - trying to figure out when a county sheriff-elect must raise his right hand and swear to fulfill all the duties of the office.
